COACH AND PROGRAM

They call it "Dodge Ball."

It's the spread offense Todd Dodge used to lead Southlake Carroll High School to a 79-1 record and four 5A state titles during his last five seasons at the Texas school. The near-flawless run elevated Dodge to a legendary status, allowing him to make the quantum leap from high school head coach to college head coach. It earned him the title of offensive genius, the same title hung on guys like Mike Martz, Urban Meyer and Rich Rodriguez.

The buzz in Denton was at a fever pitch leading up to the 2007 season, but the expectations were far too high. A tough early-season schedule, a roster of players brought in to execute a "three-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust" offense and the learning curve Dodge faced was too much for the Mean Green to overcome. The result was a 2-10 campaign in which North Texas' defense gave up more than 45 points per game.
