Team preview: South Carolina
The Blue Ribbon College Football Yearbook previews the 2007 South Carolina Gamecocks, exclusively on Insider.
On the eve of his third season in South Carolina, head coach Steve Spurrier's imprint has nearly seeped permanently into the fabric of the Palmetto State, not just the Gamecock football program. Never one to water down his opinions, Spurrier weighed in on the touchy subject of the Confederate flag in Columbia. After the Garnet and Black spring game last April, he said the flag, which was relocated from the Capitol's dome to the Confederate Soldier Monument in 2000, shouldn't be anywhere on Statehouse grounds. "My opinion is we don't need the Confederate flag at our Capitol. I don't really know anybody that wants it there, but I guess there are a lot of South Carolinians that do want it there," Spurrier was quoted as saying in an Associated Press story. Why did it take more than two years for Spurrier's view to come to light? Well, the Ol' Ball Coach added, no one had asked.
