COACH AND PROGRAM

So close, and yet so far.

The tired phrase sums up the entire 2006 season for Louisiana-Monroe, a campaign that quickly turned into a cautionary tale about the razor-thin line between success and failure in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

The Warhawks fell two points short in losses to Kansas and Kentucky. In Sun Belt play, they lost by five points to eventual league champion Troy, by two against Florida Atlantic and dropped a four-point decision to Arkansas State.

In the end, Louisiana-Monroe finished 4-8 overall and tied for fifth place in the conference. All that stood between the Warhawks and a 9-3 season, wins over Kentucky and Kansas and a share of the Sun Belt championship, was 20 points.
