For those who know Dick Tomey personally, it hasn't been that big of a surprise.
In only two years, he took a program that was barely on life support and produced the first winning season since 2000 and the first postseason bowl victory since 1990. Granted, Tomey finished 3-8 his first time through the WAC, hardly a ringing endorsement. But the plans he put in place led to a 9-4 mark in 2006 and a tie for third in the WAC. It gives this revived program hope for a better tomorrow.
"When we got here, there were a lot of things that needed upgrading," Tomey said. "But the main things were to get the students and community involved in the program again. I think we did that and everyone was rewarded with a great year."
The Spartans did receive some bad news in the spring. Because of the junior college approach the program was forced to take this century, several players have come and gone with-out earning a degree in a timely fashion.
