Frank Solich doesn't want to be the next Vanilla Ice. The Ohio University head coach is looking for his football team to be more than a "one hit," or in this case a "one season" wonder. "You see so many programs have one good year and then they can't back it up," said Solich, who more than doubled his win total at OU in one season with a 9-5 campaign in 2006. The Bobcats have a few good reasons to believe that won't be the case -- especially with perhaps the best back in the Mid-American Conference returning in senior Kalvin McRae, a two-time 1,000-yard rusher. The shifty tailback rumbled for 1,252 yards and 15 touchdowns last season as a focal point of an OU offense that rolled all the way to the MAC title game and then an appearance in the GMAC Bowl. How big was that bowl trip? Well, none of the players were even close to being born the last time a Bobcat squad went bowling, a 1968 appearance at the Tangerine Bowl. It also helped restore a winner's mentality to the program and served as a fitting capper for the first winning season in Athens since the 2000 team finished 7-4.
