Last season was a milestone in Kent State football on many levels. Not only did the Golden Flashes set a single-season attendance mark, they also finished without a losing record for the first time since 2001 and for only the second time since 1987. A program that has been the poster child for college football futility for nearly 20 years is now poised to challenge for a MAC title under fourth-year head coach Doug Martin. To understand how long it has been since Kent State fans had something to feel positive about, consider that last year's five-game winning streak, which temporarily had the Golden Flashes perched atop the MAC East division and fueled legitimate talk of a bowl bid, was the longest at Kent State since 1976 and its 4-0 conference start was its best since joining the MAC in 1951.
