COACH AND PROGRAM

They can't say "can't" about Texas football coach Mack Brown any more.

Since his arrival in Austin eight seasons ago, all Brown has done is win at least nine games each year and watch his program progressively get better. Even before last season, he had won nearly 80 percent of his games, had recorded double-digit wins four previous times and had Texas ranked in the Top 25 at season's end every year. But the detractors were out there. And despite Brown's successes, they focused on what they thought Brown couldn't do.

To wit: Brown can't win the big one. He can't beat Oklahoma. He can't win a conference championship. He can't seem to get into the national championship game. He can't take this program to the heights legendary coach Darrell Royal reached in the 1960s and '70s.

You can't say any of that now.
