It became an offseason ritual for Boise State offensive coordinator Chris Petersen to debate chicken-or-egg riddles with Dan Hawkins, the team's philosopher/head coach. One question they often asked was, "How do we keep things the same but shake them up?"
Neither man objected to these discussions. All successful coaches have them. But their goal of finding new ways to inspire a group of front-runners became harder with each passing winter.
