Defense will be the key when Alabama heads to LSU for an SEC West showdown in Week 10.

• The Alabama offensive line is not consistently driving defensive linemen off the ball and is failing at times to sustain blocks long enough for RBs Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson to get through the line of scrimmage. Offensive coordinator Jim McElwain has been forced to adjust and is calling an average of 7.3 fewer running plays per game than he did last season, and the short passing game has become a supplement to the running game. Ingram and Richardson have reliable hands and the Crimson Tide have playmakers at wide receiver in Julio Jones, Marquis Maze and Darius Hanks, who are capable of turning short throws into long gains. However, this shift means Alabama cannot control the clock as much as it would like and opposing defenses are able to focus more on rushing QB Greg McElroy.
