Shoemaker back and better than ever

One of the toughest prospects in the Midwest has to be Maurice Shoemaker (Kankakee, Ill./Bishop McNamara). The 5-foot-10, 180-pound running back caught an 80-yard touchdown pass on the first play of his freshman year and was seemingly on his to a stellar career until one night he was rushed to the emergency room. "I woke up in the middle of the night and my leg was swollen like a balloon." Shoemaker said. "I was lucky that the doctor in the ER had a case like mine a few years back and he knew what to do right away. "What I had was called Compartment Syndrome, which is the compression of nerves and blood flow. There was a recent case where a person had their leg amputated. I had surgery the same night I was brought in which saved my leg, but I sat out most of my sophomore season."
