With offers from just about every school out West, including both local schools, USC and UCLA, defensive end Devon Moreland (Los Angeles/Salesian) appeared to be a lock to play somewhere in the Pac-10. When word broke late last week that Moreland committed to SMU, a school he never even visited, it was beyond surprising. According to the coaches at Salesian, Moreland has family in Texas and had built a strong relationship with the Mustangs staff. The opportunity to come in and play early played a role, as well as the desire to leave the state and experience something new. Saying that, this one still has to rank among the biggest recruiting shockers in years. It was only back in May that Moreland listed a top five of Arizona, Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA and Washington with the Bruins a solid leader. He mentioned wanting to take his official visits before deciding and didn't appear close to committing anywhere.
