CBB Summer Buzz: Arkansas
Mike Anderson has the task of transporting his tough-minded style to Fayetteville
Insider knows you're hot for hoops during the summer, so we're bringing you a closer look at a few of the big-profile schools before most freshmen have even moved into their dorms. We continue with Arkansas.
Arkansas Razorbacks
2010-11: 18-13
Pressure defense. Quick transitional buckets. Using the sideline as a sixth defender. Dominating the second half. These are all elements attributed to squads coached by Mike Anderson.
For years, this was how UAB and then Missouri played the game. Even Bob Knight, then the head coach at Texas Tech, was quoted (following a 2007 loss to Mizzou) that if he was a casual observer of the college game, he would quickly ascertain Missouri's style of play: "They play well. They stay at it. They play hard and they work hard."
Since Anderson has now swapped schools and conferences, given the task of raising Arkansas to the top of the SEC West division, one would assume those same concepts will follow Anderson to Fayetteville (just as they followed Anderson from Birmingham to Columbia). However, Anderson insists that isn't the case, at least not at first: "When we got here, we didn't have much time to work with the players and so it's a process of teaching that system. People talk about 40 minutes of hell but right now, it's maybe 15 or 20 minutes of hell until we can get better at it."
