No. 1 center picks Bruins

ESPN.com's top-ranked center in 2010 Josh Smith gave UCLA a verbal commitment on Monday night, according to multiple sources.

Smith's decision came down to the Bruins and Washington. The tradition and history of UCLA eventually won out.

"In the end, I just looked at where I would feel most comfortable," Smith told the L.A. Times. "The history and tradition appealed to me a lot. They've won 11 championships and all the great players who have come through the school."

Smith joins ESPNU 100 shooting guard Tyler Lamb (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei H.S.) in the Bruins' 2010 class.

ESPNU 100 Anthony Brown ends it for Cardinal

According to multiple sources, ESPNU 100 small forward Anthony Brown verbally committed to Stanford on Monday, choosing the Cardinal over California and UCLA.

"Brown, who has yet to turn 17 years old, is a young senior with an impressive upside," according to ESPN.com Recruiting Coordinator Joel Francisco. "He's a sinewy wing-type who has a solid stroke to the 3-point line as well as a very high basketball IQ.

"He handles the ball well in the open court and is a tremendous passer to boot," Francisco added. "In the past year he has become much better at getting to the basket. His athleticism has also improved immensely and as of now he is definitely a threat to get to the rim off the dribble."

Brown is a key addition for the young Stanford coaching staff.

"Overall, Anthony was a must-get for (head coach) Johnny Dawkins and his staff," Francisco said. "Stanford is teetering on mediocrity in terms of talent and depth and it definitely needed an impact recruit.

"With 6-9 John Gage (Vashon Island, Wash.) and 5-10 Aaron Bright (Bellevue, Wash) on board they're heading in the right direction. If Dawkins can strike gold and somehow lure ESPNU 100 recruit Dwight Powell (Toronto, Ont./IMG Academy) away from Harvard and Georgia Tech, the Cardinal should be rewarded with a Top 20 recruiting class."

Phil Pressey ends it with Mizzou commitment

According to the Columbia Daily Tribune, ESPNU 100 point guard Phil Pressey verbally committed to Missouri on his official visit this weekend. Pressey had considered the Tigers along with Arizona, UCLA, Baylor and LSU.

ESPN.com National Recruiting Director Paul Biancardi talks about this lightning quick lead guard.

"Phil is one of the most exciting point guards in the country and is without a doubt the catalyst for his team.

"He thrives in the transition game where he is almost impossible to keep out of the lane. When teams do force him out he can his open teammates for assists. He's also terrific as the shot clock is winding down where he can create off the dribble for himself or others."

Pressey can also knock down shots in or out of the lane.

"Phil's a capable three point shooter when given time and space and is also a very effective scorer in the mid-range game," Biancardi said. "Despite his lack of height, he understands how to get his floater and jumper off in the middle area which is necessary at the next level."

"One word of caution for Phil is he has a tendency to over-penetrate (gets too deep in the lane) which can lead to turnovers."

Biancardi also offers his thoughts on Pressey's defensive prowess.

"Defensively, he's quick as a cat and can disrupt other teams offenses," he said. "He must learn not to gamble as much and he must do a bettter job of keeping his man in front of him."

Finally, Biancardi offers his view on what Pressey will bring to Columbia.

"Phil never gets rattled in pressure situations and seems to enjoy these moments. Don't let his size fool you, Phil is a tough and talented competitor.

"He's an ideal point guard for Missouri head coach Mike Anderson's 40 minutes of pressing style," Biancardi concluded. "Phil is exactly what Anderson looks for in a lead guard and he'll deliver in a big way in the Big 12."

He joins Ricky Kreklow (Columbia, Md./Rock Bridge H.S.) in the Tigers 2010 recruiting class.

PG Kendall Williams, UCLA part ways

According to sources close to the situation, Kendall Williams, a 6-3 senior out of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., decided to explore other options after being a UCLA recruit for over two years.

Williams indicated that he felt UCLA wasn't a good fit anymore for various reasons which he declined to discuss.

ESPN.com Recruiting Coordinator Joel Francisco has watched Williams develop over the past three years.

"Kendall is a solid mid-to-high major prospect who can swing between both guard positions with equal aplomb," he said. "His jump shot is consistent out to the stripe and he is quite bouncy when elevating in the paint area.

"He has a done a much better job of manning the point guard position this spring and summer, but he can still improve his decision making and fundamentals as he sometimes leaves his feet while passing."

Williams has a new list of schools he will be working from.

"Although he's just been put back on the recruiting market, a number of schools have shown interest including San Francisco, Washington State, Washington, Stanford, and Cal-Berkeley," Francisco noted. "If Williams doesn't sign in November, look for him to be one of the more heavily pursued prospects in the west coast during his senior campaign."

With the departure of Williams, the Bruins are left with one scholarship point guard in 6-3 sophomore Jerime Anderson. As a result Ben Howland has started to pursue the likes of Ray McCallum (Beverly Hills, Mich./Detroit Country) and Trevor Releford (Kansas City, Mo./Bishop Miege) during the summer evaluation period.
