PG Kendall Williams, UCLA part ways

According to sources close to the situation, Kendall Williams, a 6-3 senior out of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., decided to explore other options after being a UCLA recruit for over two years.

Williams indicated that he felt UCLA wasn't a good fit anymore for various reasons which he declined to discuss.

ESPN.com Recruiting Coordinator Joel Francisco has watched Williams develop over the past three years.

"Kendall is a solid mid-to-high major prospect who can swing between both guard positions with equal aplomb," he said. "His jump shot is consistent out to the stripe and he is quite bouncy when elevating in the paint area.

"He has a done a much better job of manning the point guard position this spring and summer, but he can still improve his decision making and fundamentals as he sometimes leaves his feet while passing."

Williams has a new list of schools he will be working from.

"Although he's just been put back on the recruiting market, a number of schools have shown interest including San Francisco, Washington State, Washington, Stanford, and Cal-Berkeley," Francisco noted. "If Williams doesn't sign in November, look for him to be one of the more heavily pursued prospects in the west coast during his senior campaign."

With the departure of Williams, the Bruins are left with one scholarship point guard in 6-3 sophomore Jerime Anderson. As a result Ben Howland has started to pursue the likes of Ray McCallum (Beverly Hills, Mich./Detroit Country) and Trevor Releford (Kansas City, Mo./Bishop Miege) during the summer evaluation period.

Bruins capture Anthony Stover

Touted Anthony Stover of Windward (Los Angeles, Calif.) has given his commitment to UCLA over Arizona. The 6-foot-10 Stover, rated No. 30 among centers in Class 2009, joins forwards Tyler Honeycutt, Reeves Nelson and Brendan Lane in UCLA's recruiting class. Among Stover's other offers are Arizona State, Connecticut, Southern California, Washington, Gonzaza, Nevada and Creighton.

ESPN.com's Recruiting Coordinator Joel Francisco says the Bruins found the center they were looking for.

"UCLA got their big man when 6-9 senior Anthony Stover selected the Bruins on Friday," said Francisco.

Francisco has watched Stover steadily improve each year.

"Anthony has improved immensely since his sophomore campaign when I first noticed him in the CIF Southern Section championships," he said. "He has a lengthy frame and is just beginning to realize his potential. Like most bigs his defense is ahead of his offense as he is the best shot blocker in the west. His rebounding prowess has improved as well." Stover needs to work on his offense when he arives in Westwood.

"His offensive game has come a long ways in the last couple of years, but he is still extremely raw," Francisco notes. "He has a very good feel in the paint area and is a terrific passer. His pivot moves have improved, but that is an area that needs polishing. In addition, he brings the ball down too often to gather himself and he doesn't finish consistently around the basket due to a lack of strength. However, with his length, soft hands, and coaching he should become an effective player by the time he leaves UCLA."

His defense should earn him playing time right away next season.

"Overall, Stover is a solid commitment for the Bruins with a significant upside," Francisco said. "And due to his defensive presence he should find some playing time sooner rather than later."

Stephan Van Treese picks Pitino and Louisville

Stephan Van Treese has committed to Louisville of the Big East over UCLA, Kansas, Indiana, Ohio State, Michigan State and Purdue. The 6-foot-9 prospect, ranked No. 47 among power forwards in Class 2009, made the decision after Louisville coach Rick Pitino flew to Indianapolis and formally offered the senior. Van Treese becomes the fourth Louisville commit including ESPNU 100 prospects Peyton Siva, a guard from Franklin (Seattle, Wash.) and Rakeem Buckles, a forward from Pace (Miami, Fla.), plus rated guard Mike Marra of Northfield-Mt. Hermon School, Mass.

ESPN.com's Recruiting Coordinator Antonio Williams talks about Van Treese and his decision.

"Rick Pitino has the recruiting fastball that allows him to snag commits from anywhere in the country, therefore it should come as no surprise that he went into Big Ten territory to get a pledge from Van Treese," said Williams. "Van Treese will provide the Cardinals with a physical inside presence that has the strength and muscle to compete on the interior in the rough and rugged Big East. To compliment his body and strength, he has very good athleticism, which should help him immensely in Pitino's up-tempo system. He runs the floor very well and should clean up by scoring points in transition, started by his defensive rebounding ability.

Van Treese needs to work on scoring in the post, according to Williams.

"He can face up and hit short jumpers, but he really needs to improve his post game and footwork to score consistently deep in the post with his back to the basket," he said.

Williams believes Van Treese will be a perfect fit in Pitino's '09 recruiting class.

"With Buckles, an athletic, quick combo forward that lacks strength and muscle, Van Treese serves as the perfect compliment," said Willaims. "His rugged style of play will allow Buckles to roam on defense and make plays in transition without having to concentrate on the dirty work as much, which will alleviate some of the pounding that Buckles' rather slight frame will have to absorb."

"Conversely, Buckles likes to play on the perimeter and likes to use the dribble-drive, which should result in a number of scoring chance for Van Treese resulting from Buckles' penetration," Williams continued. "Adding the long-ranging shooting abilities Siva and Marra should only stretch defenses thin and open up the interior for Van Treese."
