Buckeyes gain first '11 recruit
According to multiple sources, Ohio State head coach Thad Matta has landed his first recruit from the Class of 2011. Point guard Shannon Scott chose the Buckeyes over Clemson, Georgia Tech and Northwestern among others on Wednesday.
"I just felt like it was the right place to be at," Scott told ESPN affiliate www.Bucknuts.com soon after committing. "I knew even if I didn't end up playing basketball I'd still want to be there. It's a great school and really suits me, so playing basketball there will just be a bonus. I really like Coach Matta and the whole staff. It's just a great place."
ESPN Recruiting Coordinator Mike LaPlante watched Scott shine last weekend at the Elite 8 Thanksgiving hardwood Classic.
"With his outstanding skill set Shannon has tremendous basketball ability, but as a point guard he is ahead of the curve for most players his age in that he has already figured out what his main job is as a leader on the floor: win the game!," said LaPlante. "This smart player maker is extremely ball quick and he's an excellent push guy that sets the tempo and puts incredible pressure on the defense by getting the ball up the floor and into scoring areas.
"He knows how to utilize a ball screen and is money pulling up off the dribble from the free throw area," he continued. "He's a solid defender that that covers a lot of ground and does a nice job on the ball.
"Sometimes he plays too fast resulting in a few unforced turnovers and he needs to avoid leaving his feet without knowing to who he's passing to."
Scott is the son of former North Carolina and NBA guard Charlie Scott.

Buckeyes land in-state point guard
According to the Columbus Dispatch, point guard Aaron Craft has verbally committed to the Ohio State Buckeyes. The 6-foot-3 Craft recently reneged on a pledge to Tennessee, citing a desire to play closer to his Findlay, Ohio home.
ESPN.com Recruiting Coordinator Reggie Rankin has watched Craft lead the star studded All Ohio Red travel squad this spring.
"Craft is a competitive, tough led guard that plays with great energy, urgency and passion," Rankin said. "He has a tremendous basketball IQ and is an excellent decision maker.
"Aaron is a good athlete and is a solid ball handler, passer and open shooter with range to the arc. He has the ability to run the offense but is not a great creator off the dribble."
Craft really shines on the defensive end of the floor.
"What sets Craft apart from most guards in the 2010 class is ability to defend," Rankin noted. "He is a tremendous on ball defender. With his understanding of distance and active hands and feet he can defend both guard positions. He understands the strengths and weaknesses of his opponents and knows exactly what to take away. He takes stopping the opponent personal."
He joins a stellar 2010 class for head coach Thad Matta, which includes four ESPNU 100 prospects: Jared Sullinger, DeShaun Thomas, Jordan Sibert and Lenzelle Smith, Jr.
"Aaron will be a great fit for the Buckeyes because he could be the glue to an already outstanding class," Rankin concluded. "He'll do whatever is asked of him to help the team win. He may not be a big time star but he'll put his imprint on the program with team first approach to the game."

Terrific 25 center Michael Chandler picks Louisville
Louisville head coach Rick Pitino landed two Class of 2011 commitments on Sunday, including one from 6-foot-11 center Michael Chandler. The No. 22 prospect in ESPNU's Terrific 25 also had interest from Ohio State, Kentucky, Indiana and Florida. Small forward Ryan Taylor also committed to the Cardinals over the weekend.
ESPN.com Recruiting Coordinator Reggie Rankin notes that Chandler is still making his way in to a talented Lawrence North rotation.
"Michael receives limited playing time due to the talent and depth of Lawrence North but when he enters the game he makes his presence felt in the post immediately," Rankin said. "He is a big body that runs the floor well and has soft hands. He can finish plays through contact with ease."
Chandler can in a variety of ways when he gets the ball.
"He has a nice touch around the rim and scores in the low post with drop steps and jump hooks over his left shoulder," Rankin continued. "Or he just uses his tremendous size and strength to overpower his defender. He is also a good defensive rebounder and outlet passer."
According to Rankin, with more seasoning over the next few years Chandler should reach his tremendous potential.
"Michael is a work in progress but has tremendous upside and is a sure fire high major post player," he concluded.
Taylor and Chandler make it four Lawrence North players who will suit up for Pitino in the next four years. Junior small forward Justin Martin is committed and senior power forward Stephan Van Treese signed his letter of intent in November.

Purdue gains 2010 Anthony Johnson
ESPNU Super 60 prospect Anthony Johnson, ranked No. 6 among shooting guards in Class 2010, has chosen the Boilermakers. From Whitney Young (Chicago, Ill.), Johnson also has offers from California, Illinois, Notre Dame, Iowa, Iowa State, Marquette, Miami-Florida and Ohio State, among others. Johnson joins center Travis Carroll of Danville, Ind., and guard Terone Johnson of North Central, Ind., in Purdue's recruiting class.
ESPN.com's Recruiting Coordinator Reggie Rankin says the Boilermakers are getting a versatile scorer with a variety of moves.
"Anthony is an excellent scorer from the two guard position who can finish in transition with an acrobatic lay-up or spot up for three," Rankis said. "He is a good ball handler and passer that can also help out at the point. Johnson beats his defender with a quick first step and multiple crossover moves to set up his pull up jumper and when the defender backs off his can drain the 3 without hesitation."
Johnson is a player coaches love because he always makes good decisions.
"He is a very smooth player that looks to score but doesn't force things or make bad decisions with the ball," according to Rankin. "He will be a great fit in the Purdue motion style offense because he comes off screens and reads dribble penetration very well."
He can also defend his position, Rankin notes.
"Another reason why Johnson is a terrific fit is his ability to play in your face, man to man defenses (Purdue head coach) Matt Painter likes to employ," Rankin said. "Johnson plays with great urgency and is a good on the ball defender. He is one of the few players I saw that played in a defensive stance this summer."
"Overall, this is a great get for Painter and his staff," according to Rankin.
