Buckeyes add to top-ranked class

Ohio State landed its sixth commitment for the Class of 2010 on Tuesday when athletic small forward J.D. Weatherspoon chose the Buckeyes, according to ESPN.com team affiliate site www.bucknuts.com. Head coach Thad Matta's team is currently ranked No. 1 on ESPN.com's 2010 class rankings.

ESPN.com Recruiting Coordinator Reggie Rankin watched Weatherspoon and his All-Ohio Red AAU team dominate this summer.

"J.D.'s a super-athletic combo-forward who is a highlight waiting to happen in transition," he said. "He's a kid who's athletic enough to guard all three perimeter positions because of his outstanding length. He can also rebound all over the court.

"J.D. has improved his skill over the summer but he needs to continue to work on his shooting in order to be a all-around threat.," Rankin added. "His go-to offensive game is down on the blocks spinning and jumping over people for easy baskets. I'd like to see him improve his mid-range game."

Rankin talks about this get along with the Buckeyes outstanding class.

"This high energy forward will be a great compliment to an already terrific recruiting class. Coach Matta has done a great job of getting three terrific wing-type players in (ESPNU 100) DeShaun Thomas, (ESPNU 100) Jordan Sibert and Weatherspoon. Combine them with (ESPNU 100) Jared Sullinger, (ESPNU 100) Jordan Sibert and Aaron Craft and you have the makings for a special group."

Jared Sullinger, All Ohio Red continue torrid summer

They did it again! All Ohio Red defeated Boo Williams 74-65 in the finals of the AAU 17&Under National Championships on Saturday led by game MVP ESPNU #4 Jared Sullinger (Northland H.S./Columbus,OH) who scored an impressive 30 point and grabbed double figure rebounds.

Also turning in a strong performance was ESPN #43 Juwan Staten (Dayton,Ohio/Oak Hill Academy) who scored 15 points and played a terrific floor game while alos playing tough defense.

The group of ESPNU #26 Adrian Payne (Dayton, Ohio/Jefferson), J.D. Weatherspoon (Columbus, Ohio/Northland), Aaron Craft (Findlay, Ohio/Liberty-Benton) and Kevin Gray (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) round out a very good supporting cast.

Impressive in defeat for Boo Williams was Wake Forest commit and ESPNU #74 Travis Mckie (Richmond, Va./John Marshall) with 23 points as he was active and productive.

ESPN.com's National Recruiting Director Paul Biancardi has watched Sullinger dominate the spring and summer circuit.

"Jared is the most consistent and unstoppable high school player in the country," he said. "During the high school season his team won a state championship this past year and he has led this All-Ohio Red program to AAU National Championships in all the Nationals in each respective age group over the past three years (15-U,16-U,17-U).

"This year they have also won titles at many of the major spring and summer events. He not only wins many games but he wins championships which makes him special player."

Buckeyes land in-state point guard

According to the Columbus Dispatch, point guard Aaron Craft has verbally committed to the Ohio State Buckeyes. The 6-foot-3 Craft recently reneged on a pledge to Tennessee, citing a desire to play closer to his Findlay, Ohio home.

ESPN.com Recruiting Coordinator Reggie Rankin has watched Craft lead the star studded All Ohio Red travel squad this spring.

"Craft is a competitive, tough led guard that plays with great energy, urgency and passion," Rankin said. "He has a tremendous basketball IQ and is an excellent decision maker.

"Aaron is a good athlete and is a solid ball handler, passer and open shooter with range to the arc. He has the ability to run the offense but is not a great creator off the dribble."

Craft really shines on the defensive end of the floor.

"What sets Craft apart from most guards in the 2010 class is ability to defend," Rankin noted. "He is a tremendous on ball defender. With his understanding of distance and active hands and feet he can defend both guard positions. He understands the strengths and weaknesses of his opponents and knows exactly what to take away. He takes stopping the opponent personal."

He joins a stellar 2010 class for head coach Thad Matta, which includes four ESPNU 100 prospects: Jared Sullinger, DeShaun Thomas, Jordan Sibert and Lenzelle Smith, Jr.

"Aaron will be a great fit for the Buckeyes because he could be the glue to an already outstanding class," Rankin concluded. "He'll do whatever is asked of him to help the team win. He may not be a big time star but he'll put his imprint on the program with team first approach to the game."

Terrific 25 center Michael Chandler picks Louisville

Louisville head coach Rick Pitino landed two Class of 2011 commitments on Sunday, including one from 6-foot-11 center Michael Chandler. The No. 22 prospect in ESPNU's Terrific 25 also had interest from Ohio State, Kentucky, Indiana and Florida. Small forward Ryan Taylor also committed to the Cardinals over the weekend.

ESPN.com Recruiting Coordinator Reggie Rankin notes that Chandler is still making his way in to a talented Lawrence North rotation.

"Michael receives limited playing time due to the talent and depth of Lawrence North but when he enters the game he makes his presence felt in the post immediately," Rankin said. "He is a big body that runs the floor well and has soft hands. He can finish plays through contact with ease."

Chandler can in a variety of ways when he gets the ball.

"He has a nice touch around the rim and scores in the low post with drop steps and jump hooks over his left shoulder," Rankin continued. "Or he just uses his tremendous size and strength to overpower his defender. He is also a good defensive rebounder and outlet passer."

According to Rankin, with more seasoning over the next few years Chandler should reach his tremendous potential.

"Michael is a work in progress but has tremendous upside and is a sure fire high major post player," he concluded.

Taylor and Chandler make it four Lawrence North players who will suit up for Pitino in the next four years. Junior small forward Justin Martin is committed and senior power forward Stephan Van Treese signed his letter of intent in November.

Junior power forward DeShaun Thomas scored 31 points Saturday, breaking the Bishop Luers career scoring record in a 69-57 loss to Lawrence North. The ESPNU Super 60 prospect tied the record with 45 points on Friday in a 91-76 win over South Side. Thomas, headed to Ohio State in two years, now has 1,619 career points.

Purdue gains 2010 Anthony Johnson

ESPNU Super 60 prospect Anthony Johnson, ranked No. 6 among shooting guards in Class 2010, has chosen the Boilermakers. From Whitney Young (Chicago, Ill.), Johnson also has offers from California, Illinois, Notre Dame, Iowa, Iowa State, Marquette, Miami-Florida and Ohio State, among others. Johnson joins center Travis Carroll of Danville, Ind., and guard Terone Johnson of North Central, Ind., in Purdue's recruiting class.

ESPN.com's Recruiting Coordinator Reggie Rankin says the Boilermakers are getting a versatile scorer with a variety of moves.

"Anthony is an excellent scorer from the two guard position who can finish in transition with an acrobatic lay-up or spot up for three," Rankis said. "He is a good ball handler and passer that can also help out at the point. Johnson beats his defender with a quick first step and multiple crossover moves to set up his pull up jumper and when the defender backs off his can drain the 3 without hesitation."

Johnson is a player coaches love because he always makes good decisions.

"He is a very smooth player that looks to score but doesn't force things or make bad decisions with the ball," according to Rankin. "He will be a great fit in the Purdue motion style offense because he comes off screens and reads dribble penetration very well."

He can also defend his position, Rankin notes.

"Another reason why Johnson is a terrific fit is his ability to play in your face, man to man defenses (Purdue head coach) Matt Painter likes to employ," Rankin said. "Johnson plays with great urgency and is a good on the ball defender. He is one of the few players I saw that played in a defensive stance this summer."

"Overall, this is a great get for Painter and his staff," according to Rankin.

Buckeyes add another Super 60 prospect in Lenzelle Smith, Jr.

Outstanding shooting guard Lenzelle Smith, ranked No. 51 overall in the ESPNU Super 60 for the Class of 2010, has chosen the Ohio State Buckeyes. Among Smith's other offers were Illinois, Indiana, Notre Dame, Northwestern, DePaul, Virginia, Boston College, Marquette, Kentucky and Miami-Florida. He averaged 14 points for Zion-Benton Township, Ill., last season.

Smith is the fifth commitment in OSU's 2010 class, joining three other ESPNU Super 60 prospects in guard Jordan Sibert of Princeton (Cincinnati, Ohio), plus forwards Jared Sullinger of Northland (Columbus, Ohio) and DeShaun Thomas of Bishop Luers (Fort Wayne, Ind.). The Buckeyes also have a pledge from touted guard Cameron Wright of Benedictine (Cleveland, Ohio).

ESPN.com's Recruiting Coordinator Reggie Rankin breaks down Smith's game.

"Smith is a strong and physical left handed scorer," Rankin said. "He can shoot the three off the catch or dribble and also has a deadly pull up jumper especially going to his left. Smith is in attack mode on every catch and can score in bunches. He is also strong and skilled enough to post smaller perimeter players."

Smith can also dish the ball when he attracts a crowd.

"He's an underrated and willing passer when the defense brings a second defender," Rankin said.

OSU is getting a versatile scorer who should make an immediate impact in Columbus, according to Rankin.

"Smith is a very good offensive rebounder who is tough to box out because of his strength and hunger to put the ball in the basket," he said. "He is another versatile wing that will fit perfectly in the Buckeyes spread offensive attack. Buckeye fans will love this kids scoring mentality."

Buckeyes land 2010 Jordan Sibert

Guard Jordan Sibert, ranked No. 41 overall in the ESPNU Super 60 for Class 2010, has chosen the Ohio State Buckeyes. He also considered West Virginia, Xavier, Cincinnati, Louisville, Maryland and Miami-Florida among his many offers.

Sibert is the fourth commitment in OSU's 2010 class, joining ESPNU Super 60 forwards Jared Sullinger of Northland (Columbus, Ohio) and DeShaun Thomas of Bishop Luers (Fort Wayne, Ind.); plus guard Cameron Wright of Benedictine (Cleveland, Ohio).

ESPN.com's Recruiting Coordinator Reggie Rankin describes Sibert as an athletic slasher.

"Sibert is super athletic and plays above the rim in transition," Rankin said. "He slashes from the wing in the half court and will power dunk with a clear path to the rim or finish through contact when the defense is in position to challenge."

Sibert can also step back and hit long range shots.

"He can knock down the open three with time or penetrate the lane for his pull up jumper," Rankin noted. "Sibert had a terrific spring and summer and emerged as not only a top 3 player in the talent rich state of Ohio but made his presence felt around the country earning him the #41 spot on the ESPNU Super 60."

Rankin says Sibert's game will fit in nicely at OSU.

"Sibert will be a perfect fit in Columbus for (head coach) Thad Matta because of his versatility and ability to thrive in Matta's 4 out 1 in spread offense," he said. "He is also athletic enough to be an excellent perimeter defender. Sibert will excite the fans of the Schottenstein Center with his high wire act in transition."

Stephan Van Treese picks Pitino and Louisville

Stephan Van Treese has committed to Louisville of the Big East over UCLA, Kansas, Indiana, Ohio State, Michigan State and Purdue. The 6-foot-9 prospect, ranked No. 47 among power forwards in Class 2009, made the decision after Louisville coach Rick Pitino flew to Indianapolis and formally offered the senior. Van Treese becomes the fourth Louisville commit including ESPNU 100 prospects Peyton Siva, a guard from Franklin (Seattle, Wash.) and Rakeem Buckles, a forward from Pace (Miami, Fla.), plus rated guard Mike Marra of Northfield-Mt. Hermon School, Mass.

ESPN.com's Recruiting Coordinator Antonio Williams talks about Van Treese and his decision.

"Rick Pitino has the recruiting fastball that allows him to snag commits from anywhere in the country, therefore it should come as no surprise that he went into Big Ten territory to get a pledge from Van Treese," said Williams. "Van Treese will provide the Cardinals with a physical inside presence that has the strength and muscle to compete on the interior in the rough and rugged Big East. To compliment his body and strength, he has very good athleticism, which should help him immensely in Pitino's up-tempo system. He runs the floor very well and should clean up by scoring points in transition, started by his defensive rebounding ability.

Van Treese needs to work on scoring in the post, according to Williams.

"He can face up and hit short jumpers, but he really needs to improve his post game and footwork to score consistently deep in the post with his back to the basket," he said.

Williams believes Van Treese will be a perfect fit in Pitino's '09 recruiting class.

"With Buckles, an athletic, quick combo forward that lacks strength and muscle, Van Treese serves as the perfect compliment," said Willaims. "His rugged style of play will allow Buckles to roam on defense and make plays in transition without having to concentrate on the dirty work as much, which will alleviate some of the pounding that Buckles' rather slight frame will have to absorb."

"Conversely, Buckles likes to play on the perimeter and likes to use the dribble-drive, which should result in a number of scoring chance for Van Treese resulting from Buckles' penetration," Williams continued. "Adding the long-ranging shooting abilities Siva and Marra should only stretch defenses thin and open up the interior for Van Treese."
