Butch Beard was always a hard-nosed player during his career at Louisville and then for nine years in the NBA in the 1970s.
He has brought a lot of that toughness to his current job as coach at Morgan State, a team that hasn't won a MEAC title since 1977. The team has improved each year on his watch, but this season could be a real bear for the Bears. They're young and inexperienced, a little undermanned overall with just 10 scholarship players and they're going up against a schedule that could be beyond challenging.
"It's a rebuilding year with a very tough schedule, the toughest in school history," Beard said. "The people that are returning are going to have to step up and then give the young kids an opportunity to get their feet wet, get knocked down and stand back up. I know they don't have a clue what's getting ready to happen to them."
