COACH AND PROGRAM

"Guarded optimism" might be the most appropriate way to describe coach Ted Woodward's outlook on his second season as at Maine.

But, what coach wouldn't be optimistic if he returned a starting backcourt with the talent and experience of 6-2 seniors Kevin Reed and Ernest Turner in a guard-oriented league?

Reed (12.8 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 1.7 apg, 2.2 spg) has been a second-team All-America East selection each of the last two seasons and Turner (13.7 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 2.8 apg, 1.0 spg) stepped in and led the Black Bears in scoring last season after transferring from UNLV.

"They are both great shooters and both can score," Woodward said. "Kevin just does a few more power things than Ernest does and Ernest does a few more ball handling things than Kevin does, but both of them are dynamic."
