Team preview: Jackson State

There were some highs, some lows. Some expected, some unexpected. Some goals were met, others weren't.

Yet, when Jackson State men's basketball coach Tevester Anderson looks back on last season, he feels good about the strides the program made in his second year.

The Tigers finished above .500 in the conference and won six of their last nine games, including in the SWAC Tournament, where they advanced to the semifinals before losing to eventual champion Alabama A&M.

"You're ultimate goal going into every season is to win a championship,'' said Anderson, who garnered a reputation as an excellent recruiter while an assistant coach at Auburn and Georgia in his earlier years. "We didn't do that, so naturally we're disappointed. Looking at it overall, though, we made progress. And that's important. You want to make progress every year. I'm really looking forward to this year."

At times, JSU played well, i.e. road wins at Stephen F. Austin, Grambling State, Alcorn State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff. At times, JSU played poorly, i.e. home losses to Southern University and Mississippi Valley State.
