The Florida A&M Rattlers weren't able to defend their MEAC championship last year.
In 2003-04, Mike Gillespie led Florida A&M to a surprising MEAC title and then made a nice run in the NCAA Tournament. The Rattlers routed Lehigh in the play-in game to become just the seventh team with a losing record to win a game in the tournament. Florida A&M then played top-seeded Kentucky and gave the Wildcats all they wanted before falling. Some Kentucky fans thought the unexpected tough game against Florida A&M contributed to the Wildcats' upset loss to UAB in the second round.
Things never quite jelled last season for the Rattlers. They played their usual tough non-conference schedule to help keep the school's athletic program out of debt. In league play, they finished with a decent 10-8 league record but that was only good enough for a seventh-place finish.
