COACH AND PROGRAM

Brad Brownell has led a charmed life as a college basketball coach. Unusual for a young coach, the 41-year-old DePauw graduate has never had to take over a program that was in shambles. When Jerry Wainwright left UNC Wilmington after a 23-win season in 2002, Brownell -- his top assistant -- inherited a veteran team. And when he moved on to Wright State in 2006, Brownell found a core of talented young players waiting for him.

And after Oliver Purnell surprised Clemson with his abrupt departure to DePaul last spring, Brownell inherited a program coming off four straight 20-win seasons.
