COACH AND PROGRAM

Jacksonville State coach Mike LaPlante made the most with what he had in 2005-06.

His team produced the biggest turnaround in Division I, winning nine more games than it did in 2004-05 (the Gamecocks went 7-22, 2-14 in the OVC). And after missing the OVC Tournament the previous year, the Gamecocks went to the tournament semifinals in 2006 before losing to champion Murray State by five points.

Several of LaPlante's top eight players last year were former walk-ons.

It's a different scenario this year.

"We trade experience for talent level," LaPlante said. "I'm really excited with the young group we've got."

LaPlante's strength a year ago was in the backcourt; now, it's the frontcourt.
