As usual, college hoops has provided some early surprises. Few expected Illinois to be 14-0 to this point. Florida a top-five team? That shocked everybody.
But some other unusual happenings are lurking out there that you probably aren't aware of. Let's dig beneath the surface using points per possession to find some teams that might be the surprises -- both good and bad -- of the next three months.
The game between Gonzaga and Saint Joseph's provided an eye-opener. For most, the shock was how porous the Zags' D was. Gonzaga surrendered 94 points on 72 possessions -- roughly 1.29 points per possession. To put this is in perspective, it ranks as the worst defensive game this season, in terms of points per possession, from any team currently in the top 10.
