Sampson's second phone violation was just flat-out dumb

Kelvin Sampson is a friend, and hopefully, he'll remain a friend after he reads this. But for him to get involved in a recruiting phone call controversy at Indiana -- this one coming only one year after his former employer, Oklahoma, received crippling NCAA sanctions -- was just flat-out dumb.

Kelvin Sampson is a competitor. Knowing him, the money is not as important as winning -- although the loss of his $500,000 bonus is a pretty severe punishment. I am glad he stepped up the way he did on Sunday to take responsibility for his mistakes. But he should have known better than to make the same mistake. Now the question remains for him and others: Is the cost to your reputation really worth violating NCAA rules?
