Phone Calls, the Internet and recruiting
So much has been written about phone calls, text messaging and the Internet during the recruiting process that it makes my head spin. If ever there was a generation that could handle the technology involved with e-mails, text messaging and cell phones, this is it, but the current information age certainly adds new layers to everything on the recruiting and coaching landscape. I have been on record as saying that phone call rules are somewhat silly and out-of-date. Right now, a school can only place one phone call per week to a prospect. That is not enough. With only one phone call per week, if an assistant coach calls a prospect on Monday, the head coach cannot call the prospect until the following Monday at the earliest. However, if an assistant coach calls a prospect on Monday, he can still text-message the kid on Tuesday and tell him to call the head coach, who can then return the call to the kid if he is not reachable. See, you can send text messages anytime you want, and a prospect can call a coach anytime he wants.
