Get to Know Osahon Tongo
Naperville (Ill.) North High senior middle linebacker Osahon Tongo says his best attribute is his heart.
"I am not afraid of anybody," Tongo says.
It's that attitude and his ability to excel on the field and in the classroom that has made him a highly sought-after recruit this fall. Finishing his senior season with more than 100 and 11 sacks, he cemented himself as one of the top linebacker prospects in the country.
After returning from a trip to Duke this past weekend, Tongo decided he had seen all he needed to see and announced his commitment to Georgia Tech. Tongo picked the Yellow Jackets over Duke and Boston College.
"I felt comfortable there," he said.
Tongo picked Georgia Tech both for the education he will receive as well as the football team. Education is something his parents, Esther and Dwin, have stressed all his life, and they have accompanied him on his visits.
"Good grades were always the top priority and football was second," said Osahon. "They have to live with the decision also and will be part of the process."
Said Esther, "Osahon has handled the process very well, and we are proud of him."
"I feel like he is blessed to have this opportunity to do well in school and in football, [a sport] he loves."
Georgia Tech wants Tongo to come in and compete for a spot at middle linebacker.
"I want to come in and make an impact soon," he said.
Now that Osahon has wrapped up the recruiting process, the Tongo family will begin it all over again with his little brother Osasuyi, a rising golf star.
If he has his older brother's attitude on the links, look out.
Scouts Inc.: What is your favorite NFL team?
Osahon Tongo: Atlanta Falcons.
Scouts Inc.: Who is your favorite player, and do you use his play as a model?
Tongo: Michael Vick. At my position, Ray Lewis and Brain Urlacher. I like how they play with a nonstop motor and are always running through every hit. You hardly see a play where they are not around the ball.
Scouts Inc.: What is it about your position that you love?
Tongo: Getting to run and hit someone. You see the best hits from linebackers, and they are kind of the quarterback of the defense. And defense wins championships.
Scouts Inc.: Now that the season is over, do you feel you accomplished your goals?
Tongo: I accomplished most of my goals. One was leadership; I wanted to lead the best I could and never take a play off. Also, I wanted over 10 sacks and I had 11.
Scouts Inc.: Do you have a pregame ritual?
Tongo: Before every game after school I watch "Any Given Sunday." I also listen to some pregame music, usually Lil' Wayne.
Scouts Inc.: Favorite subject in school and why?
Tongo: Science, and in particular a physics class I am in right now. I like to use my imagination.
Scouts Inc.: Favorite meal?
Tongo: Orange beef with fried rice from Chinese Kitchen, a local restaurant.
Scouts Inc.: Super Bowl XL prediction?
Tongo: Since things are not looking good for the Falcons, I will go with my Bears over the Bengals.
