South Carolina has always been home to some of the top high school prospects in the southeast region. Defensive prospects have always been in abundance as evidenced by the number of current NFL players with South Carolina ties. Of the 53 players from South Carolina currently on NFL rosters, 38 of them play on the defensive side of the ball.
Such NFL stars include New York Jets DT John Abraham (Lamar), Super Bowl Champ and New England Patriots DE Richard Seymour (Gadsden), Tennessee Titans DT Albert Haynesworth (Hartsville) and St. Louis Rams LB Dexter Coakley (Mt. Pleasant).
High school sleepers like Brett Favre, Steve McNair and Jerry Rice prove recruiting in Mississippi is not an exact science.
