The inside linebacker has been called the quarterback of the defense. The position often conjures up thoughts of hard-hitting, fierce leaders. Many of the game's great defenders -- Ray Nitschke, Dick Butkus, Mike Singletary, Ray Lewis -- all manned the inside linebacker spot.

The good ones can step up and be physical against the run, play sideline-to-sideline and also drop and play in space versus the pass. It can be hard to find players that possess the ability to do everything. In this age of specialization, you often will have your physical linebackers who play on run downs, and those who are a little more athletic who come in against the pass. Ideally, though, you search for that player who can do it all, who can lead your defense and stay on the field in all situations.
