QB Bell leads Kansas crop
Kansas is a key ground for junior college recruiting. The state is home to the Jayhawk Conference, which houses eight junior college football programs. Many FBS programs will recruit these junior colleges looking for immediate help or place unqualified recruits into one of those schools hoping to re-sign them down the road.
The state offers more than junior college talent, though. Kansas will be limited in what it turns out each year, especially with elite-level talent, but having coached at one of those junior colleges and recruited the state, I have seen that some talent can be found, especially in the Kansas City, Kan., and Wichita areas. Proof that some good players can be unearthed among the state's wheat fields is that since Scouts Inc. began, Kansas has produced at least two ESPNU 150 prospects in each class, with the exception of 2006 (zero) and 2009 (one). The 2010 talent in the state is solid, with two 150 watch list members and seven three-star prospects, including top-40 athletes Justin McCay (Shawnee Mission, Kan./Bishop Miege) and Joseph Randle (Wichita, Kan./Southeast).
