Owls ride St. Clair's versatility into postseason

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- At 6-foot-5, Cole St.Clair strikes an imposing figure on the mound, but the Memphis hitters aren't intimidated. St.Clair is stuck in a second-and-third jam of his own creation -- he has already given up two runs in the eighth inning, and Rice's once-sizable lead has shrunk to 13-9.

But the Owls' bullpen is quiet. Coach Wayne Graham will trust St.Clair to get one final out and extract himself from his mess.

St.Clair stares in, his left arm dangling in front of him, then rocks back and lifts his long right leg impossibly high. He grunts as he unleashes a tailing fastball, and K.K. Chalmers lifts a lazy fly ball to right. The Owls are out of the woods and on their way to the Conference USA championship game the next day.
