Chad Ford's Analysis: Holiday can take a huge sigh of relief. He slipped a bit, not because of his talent, but because of some concerns about a shoulder injury that were just enough to scare some teams away, a la what happened to Danny Granger with mild concerns about his knee a few years ago. This is a great pick for Philly, which gets a lottery talent at 17 and has its point guard of the future.

Draft Projection: Lottery

Notes: Holiday declared for the 2009 NBA Draft on April 9 and has decided to hire agent Dan Fegan, ending his college eligibility.

Positives:
Jrue Holiday
Holiday might have been the most complete freshman in 2008-09.

Summary: June 8 Update: Not sure exactly what to read into this, but the Knicks are bringing back UCLA's Jrue Holiday for a second workout. Holiday is in the mix at No. 4 to Sacramento and after that I think the Knicks, Raptors, Bucks and Pacers will all give him a look in the lottery. This may be his chance to secure a coveted spot playing for Mike D'Antoni.

June 12 Update: Holiday came into the season ranked as one of the top six prospects on ESPN.com's Top 100 and stayed there for much of the season. Toward the end of the season, however, he struggled and his stock started to dip. However, he has been very impressive in workouts and looks like a virtual lock for the lottery at this point. I spoke with a number of NBA GMs, and most of them have him ranked somewhere between 4 and 13 on their draft boards. He announced on Saturday that he was hiring an agent, Dan Fegan, and staying in the draft.

May 29 Update: Holiday was the biggest point guard, standing at 6-3¼ in socks and 6-4¼ in shoes. His 6-7 wingspan and 8-4½ standing reach were also tops among point guards. See the full Chad Ford story

May 18 update: In a draft without many players with big upside, Holiday has the chance to be a special player someday. I think he'll fall somewhere in the 8-14 range on draft night. The Knicks, Raptors, Bucks, Pacers and Suns are all possibilities for him. However, some interest exists even higher than that range because Sacramento, Oklahoma City, Minnesota and Golden State all need point guards and have interest in Holiday. Remember that last year, most teams had Westbrook ranked in a similar spot, and he ended up going No. 4 in the draft. That's not out of the question for Holiday. Apr 9 Update: Holiday came into the season ranked as a Top 6 prospect on ESPN.com's Top 100 and stayed there for much of the season. Toward the end of the season, Holiday struggled and his stock started to dip. However, I spoke with a number of NBA GMs and most of them still have Holiday ranked somewhere between 8 and 16 on their draft boards. One or two have him higher than that. One or two have him in the early 20s. Holiday is expected to stay in the draft if he can get a promise by at least one NBA team that they'd draft him in the lottery. "He's going to be really good," one NBA GM told ESPN.com. "The system that UCLA plays held him back. He's a much better prospect than what you saw this year. Once he gets into workouts with the Currys and Tyreke Evanses of the draft, I think you'll see him rise into the lottery. He's got a lot of physical gifts and he's got a great basketball IQ."

Mar 23 Update: Holiday really struggled over the last month of the season, but he was a pleasant surprise in the first round versus VCU. With Darren Collison out with foul trouble, Holiday scored 13 points, handed out 6 assists, played great defense and looked the part of a legit point guard. However, Holiday was a huge bust in the second round versus Villanova, shooting just 1-for-6 from the field and committing 4 turnovers. His 7 assists were a bright spot, but the consensus is pretty strong that he needs to return to UCLA for his sophomore season.

Mar 18 Update: Based on raw talent, Holiday is a lottery pick. But his lack of production, especially down the stretch, has been a problem. Most scouts believe he needs to return to UCLA for his sophomore season and play the point full time. However, if he has a big tournament the way Russell Westbrook did last year, some NBA team will snatch him up in the lottery.

Feb 27 Update: Holiday is a tough one to figure out. Teams still love his talent and feel that once Darren Collison graduates, he'll be a dominant point guard in college basketball. The problem is that Collison is still there and Holiday is struggling. Most recently, Holiday was scoreless against Arizona State and just one point versus Washington State, both losses for UCLA. While I still wouldn't be surprised to see Holiday go in the lottery if he declares for this year's draft, his best course of action would be to stay in school for another season.

Feb 6 Update: We've had Holiday ranked as high as No. 6 on our board, but his recent lack of production has made it harder to justify. Despite a couple of recent good games versus Stanford and Cal, a number of scouts have walked away from his games wondering, "What's the big deal?" "We want him to be the next Russell Westbrook, but I think it's wishful thinking," one NBA executive said. "He lacks the explosiveness of Westbrook, and he lacks the aggressiveness. He's more of a role player right now at UCLA, and I don't see him coming into the NBA and making the same impact right away. He needs to stay in school and take over the point full time." Not everyone feels this way, but I'm hearing enough doubts to slide Holiday down to No. 10 on our Big Board.

Jan. 2 update: Holiday's numbers won't wow you, but scouts love him just as much as they loved Westbrook last season. His defensive presence is fantastic, as is his versatility. Holiday needs to work on his jump shot and prove to scouts he can handle the point. If he can overcome those questions the way Russell Westbrook did, Holiday could be a Top 5 pick too.
