On Monday, Roger Montgomery, the agent for New York Knicks restricted free agent Jeremy Lin, insinuated that Lin returning to the Knicks is not a done deal.
"I know history shows most restricted free agents go back to their team, but I'm not going to assume anything. We're waiting to see what happens," he said.
Indeed, there remains a litany of variables that will dictate where Lin lands. With Lin having experienced marked success within a particular scheme and with a particular head coach, both the system and head coach should be important factors.
And how much is Jeremy Lin worth? How much a team is willing to spend on him? Lin has not earned the millions of dollars that top-20 picks typically make before heading into restricted free agency. But with Lin coming off knee surgery, and the Knicks going 12-5 to close the regular season without him, how much is he really worth? The playing time a team would offer Lin might just be perfect commentary for that.
David Thorpe says playing time, not a team's offense or style will determine where he chooses to go.
