Which teams are outperforming through the season's first two months?
Nearly two months into the 2013-14 NBA season, many of the league's early surprise teams have faded. Since starting 4-2, the Philadelphia 76ers haven't won in regulation in a month and a half, and the Orlando Magic have joined them near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings. But other overachieving teams have shown more staying power.
In the spirit of America's favorite holiday invented by Frank Costanza, let's take a look at this year's NBA Festivus miracles. I've quantified them by comparing performance to date (as evaluated by point differential, adjusted for schedule) to preseason expectations, based on a combination of my SCHOENE projections and the ESPN Fall Forecast consensus. Here are the five teams who have most outperformed those expectations.
