There might be no other franchise under more pressure to use this draft to elevate itself than the New Orleans Hornets. New Hornets owner Tom Benson, who also owns the New Orleans Saints, obviously wants to get his new investment off on the right foot. Current general manager Dell Demps and head coach Monty Williams had hoped to be a playoff team after consummating the Chris Paul trade with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Instead, the league stuck them with Plan B. The end result was a less lucrative package of talent that included a very good but injury prone shooting guard who more than likely will demand a huge contract. But they also netted a first-round pick that likely leaves them with two of the top 10 picks in this year's draft.
Assuming Benson retains Demps and Scott -- and he should -- the Hornets will have an excellent, defensive-minded coach who needs more frontcourt athletes to become a top 10 defensive team, as well as a point guard who can energize the offense, and a very capable GM to get him those players. And it'll all start with those two draft picks.
