Spring training position battles
A daily rundown of the MLB battles for playing time in March and April
Houston Astros: First Base
UPDATE: According to reports, Berkman will have arthroscopic surgery on his knee. He'll be out two to four weeks, which means he'll likely miss Opening Day. Blum takes over first base for now.
Berkman's knee gets examined: We mentioned last week that Lance Berkman dealt with a minor knee injury after hurting himself during a baserunning drill. According to Zachary Levine of the Houston Chronicle, Berkman is getting that same knee examined by the team's doctor.
Astros GM Ed Wade says he's "not concerned," but we'll keep an eye out for any updates since Berkman's knee has been drained twice already this spring. Geoff Blum would be next in line for the Astros if Berkman missed any extended time.
