Spring training position battles
A daily rundown of the MLB battles for playing time this March and April
Cincinnati Reds: Left field
Alonso doesn't want to be left out: Add yet another name to the deluge of options for the Reds' left-field job: stud prospect Yonder Alonso. The 2008 first-rounder has played first base exclusively in the minors, but with Joey Votto entrenched there in the bigs, Alonso recognizes he may need to ply his trade elsewhere. With so many names already in the running for left -- including, but not limited to, Jonny Gomes, Chris Dickerson, Wladimir Balentien and Laynce Nix -- chances are Alonso will work on a possible position switch in the minors. If he proves capable elsewhere, he could be up by midseason.
