These days, not so much. These days, if a player wants a shiny new Corvette -- and most players would consider a Chevrolet well beneath their station -- he can afford the $40K sticker price merely through judicious husbandry of his per diem for a few months. And those are the guys who are still establishing themselves as major-leaguers. David Eckstein? He earned $3.25 million this season with the Cardinals, plus another $300,000 or so for winning the World Series. That is, Eckstein could buy eight Corvettes with just the money he picked up this week.
