Insider's series on MLB teams that are out of the playoff race continues with the Houston Astros, who recently canned Cecil Cooper and look to a none-too-promising payroll horizon.

Baseball Prospectus' preseason PECOTA projection: 70-92, fifth place
Current record: 70-81, fourth place

The Astros ranked 11th or worse in the NL in runs, home runs and ERA this year, and it's all added up to the worst record in baseball since the All-Star break.
