Baltimore looks to build a foundation for future

In the offseason, the Baltimore Orioles locked up two of their most valuable position players, blossoming right fielder Nick Markakis and veteran second baseman Brian Roberts, by signing them to long-term contracts in hopes to build a solid core for their club. Additionally, the front office elected to avoid salary arbitration with George Sherrill and signed him to a one year, $2.75 million deal to return as their closer in 2009.
