Hoffman grumbling in San Diego
The Padres are close to losing Trevor Hoffman, while the Phillies are more interested in moving Bobby Abreu than they're trying to let on.

When a future Hall of Famer spends 12 years with the same team, it always seems surreal to think of him trying on someone else's cap. But in the next few weeks, one of the great closers of all time, Trevor Hoffman, is going to become an ex-Padre -- unless the Padres reverse their negotiating course in a hurry.
Hoffman stomped out of a dinner with GM Kevin Towers and CEO Sandy Alderson a couple of weeks ago -- without even tasting the croutons on the house salad. So we're taking that as a sign the Padres' two-year, $10-million offer had ruined both his appetite and his offseason.
