Manny Ramirez dangled in the winter trade market, and Angels GM Bill Stoneman could have plucked him like a ripe grape. Privately, talent evaluators from two AL West rivals prayed that Stoneman would pull the trigger on a deal that would have depleted some of the club's surplus of prospects, even if it meant seeing Manny in the LA lineup right after Vlad.

"But he didn't," sighed one exec. "Now it's going to be a whole lot tougher for us in the future."
