Four years ago in Toronto, Scott Eyre had little reason to think he would ever strike it rich. He was collecting anonymous holds for the Blue Jays and picking up assorted bits of wisdom from his buddy, mentor and fellow lefty set-up grunt Dan Plesac.

"You're never going to make $3 to $4 million a year doing what we do," Plesac used to tell him.

Even last summer, when Eyre was on his way to a fine season with the San Francisco Giants, he laughed when teammates Jason Schmidt and Jason Christiansen were discussing his free agency and one of them said he might fetch three years and $9 million.
