DETROIT – It is saddening, perhaps maddening, to see all of the boarded-up storefronts in this proud city, the remnants of stores that have moved away in the last 50 years. Still, in two grand nights in what is a vastly underrated ballpark, we were reminded of what Detroit once was, and may well be again. It is a tremendous baseball town steeped in tradition.
That tradition glowed Tuesday night, with the replaying of Ernie Harwell's Hall of Fame speech on the JumboTron, as well as great receptions for Al Kaline, Willie Horton, Jack Morris, Alan Trammell and Kirk Gibson. And although the actual game had little more drama than a midweek draw with the Royals, we were oft-reminded of Detroit's history and the All-Star Game.
