PHILADELPHIA David Wright is living proof that a calendar year is plenty of time to graduate from boy next door to man about town.
For five weeks last summer, the New York Mets assigned Wright to Norfolk, Va. Wright's hometown and the franchise prodigy hit .298 with eight homers against Triple-A pitching. Wright also lived at home, a 10-minute commute from Harbor Park, and spent his off hours playing spirited games of ping-pong, pool and Texas hold 'em with his three teenage brothers, Stephen, Matthew and Daniel.
When he's not carrying Cliff Floyd's luggage, David Wright's carrying the offensive load for the Mets.
