Cards enjoying Octoberfest

DETROIT -- Most baseball blogs out there wouldn't give the official OK to Cardinals fans to turn to, say, Cubs fans and moan that they went 19 years between World Series wins. But most baseball blogs aren't our little baseball blog.

So we say: Go ahead. You've earned that right, in your own unique way. And we'll prove it, with some invaluable World Series Useless Information:

• Why is it all right for Cardinals fans to wallow in that 19-year drought? Because no team in baseball made more postseason visits or played more postseason games in that span than the Cardinals did without winning at least once in a Series game. This was their seventh tour of baseball's Octoberfest since their tragic demise in the '87 World Series, and it took them another 66 postseason games to finally win another World Series game. The only other team that can even approach that is the Astros -- who reached the postseason six times and played 40 postseason games in that period but never won a World Series game (thanks to the White Sox). The rest of the teams in the made-the-playoffs-but-never-won-a-Series-game club over the same 19 years: Cubs, Rangers and Pirates (three times), Orioles (twice) and Rockies (once).
