Cardinals void Mateo's contract
Back on July 2, the St. Louis Cardinals held a news conference in Santo Domingo to announce their signing of 16-year-old Dominican amateur outfielder Wagner Mateo to a $3.1 million bonus. For the Cardinals, the agreement meant a new commitment to the Latin American market. For Mateo, the record deal ($3.1 million was the most ever given to an amateur teenage Latin American position player) was a remarkable achievement. For trainer Edgar Mercedes, the deal was a confirmation of his status as the biggest buscon in the business. In the past two and a half months, however, the deal started to unravel because of the Cardinals' concerns regarding Mateo's vision.
