Bracket Projection: Southern
The Jaguars struggle to score at times, making an upset unlikely
The Southern University Jaguars were borderline dominant in the Southwestern Athletic Conference this season, going 15-3 and capping off a successful season with a narrow escape in the conference tournament final against an upset-minded Prairie View A&M squad. But now the roles are reversed: Southern will head to the Big Dance as a significant underdog rather than a favorite, and will look to play the role of Cinderella. Can the Jaguars make the glass slipper fit?
ESPN Insider has your answers, as Joe Lunardi has enlisted a team of Bracketologists to compile advanced metrics, key scouting intel and best- and worst-case tournament scenarios for all 68 teams, in order to help you make smart picks in your bracket. Plus, as Lunardi fills out his bracket, he'll give you his prediction on how each team will fare.
It's hard for me to think Southern wasn't one of the bottom four teams in the field. Yet the committee historically tries to keep at least one MEAC or SWAC team from playing in Dayton. Would like to think we're long past that kind of thinking, sorry.
Best wins: at Texas A&M, Texas Southern
Worst losses: at Alcorn State, at Arkansas-Pine Bluff
