When you're the coach of a college basketball team, the influence and impact you have on the way your players perform on the court has more to do with devising the game plan, recruiting and in-game strategy than anything else.
But there are certain challenges and issues that coaches have to deal with that won't show up on a stat sheet. Here are five that can affect the way a team performs throughout the season:
1. Getting your most experienced player to defer to better offensive players on your roster
We'll see this example play out this season with the Michigan State Spartans. They return one of the most complete teams in the country and have a chance to make a run at the Final Four. But for that to happen, four-year starting point guard Keith Appling will have to emerge as a great leader, communicator and distributor while deferring to better scorers on the roster.
