Player of the Year picks
Insider's experts offer up their choices from each major conference
With the regular season completed, we asked Insider's team of former college coaches -- Fran Fraschilla, Bruce Pearl and Seth Greenberg -- to provide their conference player of the year selections. Though some picks were obvious (Doug McDermott, for example), others caused some hotly contested debate.
Who ended up getting the nod? Let's take a look.
My heart was with Cincinnati's Sean Kilpatrick, but my head went with Smith, who helped lead the Cardinals to the national championship last year. He has been even more efficient his senior year, shooting 46.8 percent from the field. Not only are Smith's shooting percentages up, but his assist and steal rates are at an elite level. He makes Louisville a dangerous team once again heading into the NCAA tournament.
There are three potential first-team All-Americans in this conference in Kilpatrick, Smith and Napier. That's right, three of the top five players in the country. My pick, however, leads his team in scoring (17.8 PPG), rebounding (6.0 RPG), assists (5.2 APG) and steals (1.8 SPG). He was responsible for 50 percent of his team's points in conference play.
Seth Greenberg: Sean Kilpatrick | G | Cincinnati Bearcats
Kilpatrick is the heart of the Bearcats. On a team that at times is offensively challenged, he is the constant. Kilpatrick's development over his career is a testament to his work ethic. The co-American champions wouldn't be in the discussion without his tangibles and -- just as important -- intangibles.
Regardless of class, Parker was the best player in the ACC from the start of the season to the finish. His freshman year culminated with a 30-point effort against North Carolina in what may be his final game at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday night. He is an ultra-efficient scorer (19.2 PPG) and hits 48.7 percent from the field. His versatility makes the Blue Devils difficult to defend.
