Nation's biggest disappointments
Oklahoma State, Notre Dame among teams failing to live up to expectations
Each week during the college basketball season, ESPN Insiders Jay Bilas and Jeff Goodman will weigh in on the biggest questions of the sport.
The discussion: Which team has been the most disappointing relative to expectations this season?
Jeff Goodman: There are a few to choose from here. Sure, Boston College has underachieved, but let's face it: No one thought the Eagles were going to make any legitimate noise come March. And the Eagles' stunning win Wednesday night over Syracuse was a shot in the arm after a long season to date. For me, this is a toss-up between Oklahoma State and Notre Dame.
The Cowboys had higher overall expectations, as some even pegged Marcus Smart to lead his team all the way to the Final Four. Instead, Travis Ford's group has lost seven straight games -- the last three without Smart -- and could wind up in the NIT instead of the Final Four.
But because I think Jay will choose Oklahoma State on this one, I'm going to change it up and go with Notre Dame. I was extremely high on this Irish team, a team that is 14-12 overall and 5-8 in a fairly weak ACC. Yes, I'm well aware that Mike Brey lost leading scorer Jerian Grant, but the Irish were 8-4 and had lost to Indiana State and North Dakota State in South Bend with Grant in the lineup.
