One false move, and college sports would have changed dramatically. Whether you think it would have been Armageddon or simply natural selection, one thing seems clear: The partial realignment that took place is only partial for now.
In fact, the University of Texas played the role of the Russians in a Cuban Missile Crisis-type of threat that nearly started a war of networks, money, propaganda and alliances. Just like the crisis of 1962, catastrophe was averted, but there is a growing sense that this is far from over. Texas still holds the power to change the landscape, and although it is no longer within range of shaking up college sports, it would take little time to make the Longhorns "war ready."
