Lofton's biggest triumph

Last summer, I was very critical of the USA Basketball committee that left Tennessee's Chris Lofton off the Pan Am team, even after his subpar performance at the trials. Based on his first three brilliant seasons in Knoxville, I thought he was owed the benefit of the doubt despite a few off shooting days. But after watching him play again in December games versus Western Kentucky and Gonzaga, something seemed wrong, because he was not playing up to the All-American level that many of us expected out of the Vols senior. After reading Chris Low's great story this week on how Lofton beat testicular cancer that was discovered during a random drug test after an NCAA tournament game in 2007, I am stunned and flabbergasted at the strength and courage Lofton has shown.
